One of the most common questions we receive from our guests before their experience with Nomad Tours Hawaiʻi is simple yet essential: “What should we wear?”
The Big Island of Hawaiʻi is incredibly diverse. In a single day, you may travel from warm, sunny coastal areas to cooler rainforests, and even up to high elevations where temperatures drop significantly. Because of this, dressing appropriately is not just about comfort, it is key to fully enjoying your experience.
At Nomad Tours, we curate private, fully customized journeys, and part of that care includes helping you prepare for the day ahead.
Understanding the island’s microclimates
Unlike many destinations, Hawaiʻi Island is home to multiple climate zones. You may begin your morning under bright sunshine along the Kona Coast, explore misty waterfalls near Hilo, and end your day watching the sunset in a much cooler environment.
This variety means that your clothing should be adaptable and layered.
Lightweight and breathable clothing
We recommend starting with lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking materials. The coastal areas of the island tend to be warm and humid, and these fabrics will help keep you cool and comfortable throughout the day.
For most of our tours, especially those along the coast or during daytime hours, a comfortable t-shirt, polo, or light blouse paired with shorts or light pants is ideal.
Layering is essential
As the day progresses and we explore higher elevations or shaded rainforest areas, temperatures can drop quickly. This is particularly important for experiences such as our Mauna Loa Stargazing or visits to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
We strongly recommend bringing:
• A light jacket or windbreaker
• A long-sleeve layer such as a sweater or hoodie
For stargazing experiences, we provide jackets and gloves, but having your own additional layer ensures maximum comfort.
Comfortable walking shoes
Many of the island’s most beautiful locations involve light walking on uneven terrain, including lava fields, forest paths, and scenic overlooks.
Closed-toe, comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are highly recommended. This provides stability and protects your feet, especially when exploring volcanic landscapes.
We advise avoiding:
• Flip-flops for extended walking
• Shoes with poor grip
That said, for beach stops such as Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, you may want to bring sandals or easy slip-ons.
Sun protection
The Hawaiian sun can be strong, even on cloudy days. Proper sun protection is essential.
We suggest:
• A wide-brim hat or cap
• Sunglasses with UV protection
• Reef-safe sunscreen (to protect both your skin and the ocean ecosystem)
Rain preparedness
Rain is a natural and beautiful part of Hawaiʻi, especially on the east side of the island. Our tours operate rain or shine, as many of the island’s most stunning features—such as waterfalls and lush valleys—are enhanced by the rain.
A light rain jacket or poncho is always a smart addition to your day pack.
Optional items for added comfort
Depending on your itinerary, you may also consider:
• A swimsuit and towel (for waterfall or beach stops such as Kulaniapia Falls)
• A small backpack to carry your essentials
• A change of clothes if you plan to swim or get wet
Dressing for elevation and stargazing
If your experience includes high-elevation areas or evening stargazing, temperatures can drop significantly after sunset. Even in Hawaiʻi, it can feel quite cold.
For these experiences, we recommend:
• Long pants
• Closed shoes
• A warm layer (in addition to what we provide)
Our team ensures you are well equipped, but being prepared will make your experience far more enjoyable.
